ABOUT IMS
The Salvatori Center co-sponsored the inaugural conference of the International Machiavelli Society (IMS), which took place in Rome, between December 13th and 16th, 2023. Over the course of four days, more than 120 Machiavelli scholars from around the world discussed Machiavelli's views on liberty, the state, and war, his literary works and new information regarding his life, as well as new documents recently discovered in archives, which will enrich our understanding of his famous treatises, The Prince and Discourses on Livy.
Plenary sessions throughout the conference brought together authors of the most important books on Machiavelli written in the past ten years. Several panels were also devoted to the reception of Machiavelli's thought and the ways in which it influenced modern political philosophy around the world, over the past 500 years. The IMS presented a lifetime achievement award to Harvey C. Mansfield, for his contributions to the study of Machiavelli, not least through his translations of his works into English.
The conference was hosted by Università Roma Tre, and the inaugural sessions took place at the Capitol, where the welcome address was delivered by the Mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri. The conference was featured in several major Italian newspapers. The founding committee of the IMS includes Salvatori faculty member Ioannis D. Evrigenis. Planning is underway for the next conference, which will most likely take place in Paris, in 2025, to be followed by a conference in Machiavelli's home city, Florence, in 2027, the 500th anniversary of Machiavelli's death.

Invasion of Ukraine
The conference encompassed two full days of discussions in a seminar format led by various experts.

The first day's discussion centered on the lure of illiberalism, populism, nationalism and how these idealistic divisions have been strengthened by the Russian War in Ukraine.

The second day addressed western liberal policies that have been impacted by these challenges, such as foreign, defense and economic policies.
